Fair dinkum, does the average bloke in the street care how we deal with boat people? I know I don't - whether we turn them around, set their boats on fire or lock them up in detention centres for years, I couldn't give a stuff and it certainly won't affect who I vote for in the upcoming election. Why are the political parties climbing over each other to find a solution?? Why are problems of foreigners appearing more important than issues we face?

What I can't understand is that a heck of a lot more 'illegal' immigrants come in via other means than boat people - and that isn't talked about at all.
Who started 'Boat People' as an issue anyway.
The main difference between "illegal" immigrants who come in via the other means is that to get in via air you need a passport and travel documents which can be checked prior to you setting foot into Australia. If there's any doubt about your character or criminal record or whatever unless you've got dodgy passports which dupe the custom officials you'll be found out then. By coming in on a leaky boat you've paid $20K to travel on (after travelling by plane to Indonesia)and throw your passport over the side of the boat then the custom official has no idea who you are or where you came from or anything other than what that person tells you. No doubt that person would tell you he's fleeing for his life and to send him back would lead to his death.
It's an issue because Labor have sold their soul and turned their back on what they believed while in opposition for 10 years and vilified the previous government over. If it's truly a non issue then why would Labor throw everything they believed in while in opposition in the trash to win over the lowest common denominator? Why dump a problem (or non problem) on our poorest neighbours and supposed allies? If they were true to themselves they would acknowledge that there is no problem and carry on regardless and probably win the election anyway.
The story here isn't the boats (although Labor changing the laws has led to 3 boats a week arriving when only 3 a year came for a few years before that), but Labor's reversal of it's values and how easily swayed they are from those values - look at Labor and how they abondoned "the greatest moral and economic challenge of our time". For anyone who doesn't know what that challenge was it was climate change.
This issue won't change my vote, Labor's terrible mismanagement of everything they've attempted and their abondonment of everything they stand for would.
I applaud Bowie for finalling tackling the big issue. I hope this gets the Blog the traffic it deserves.
Wasn't it that Tampa issue that brought it all to a head? Lil Johnny was crucified for it.
